Hey Identity Management Specialist You’ll be the person who makes sure our employee identity systems actually work together instead of fighting each other. Think of yourself as a translator between HR, IT, and security teams – you’ll spend your time in meetings figuring out why John from accounting still has access to systems from his old department, or why new contractors can’t get into anything on their first day.
Day-to-Day Reality for Identity Management Specialist
Expect to spend time troubleshooting Active Directory setups, connecting our Azure/Entra ID stuff, and yes – cleaning up tons of old accounts from people who left years ago but somehow still exist in our systems. You’ll also be the one reading through security reports and fixing whatever mess they found this time.
Look, we need someone who’s been through this before. Identity management sounds simple until you realize that “employee” can mean 20 different things depending on who’s asking. You should have dealt with the nightmare of getting HR systems to play nice with identity platforms – all those fun scenarios like someone getting hired then fired before they start, people coming back from leave, contractors who become full-time, etc.
You’ll need to be comfortable digging through HR data and pointing out when things don’t make sense. Why does this person’s job code say “engineer” but their department is “marketing”? That kind of detective work.
We’re hoping you’ve worked with ServiceNow, Azure AD/Entra ID, and tools like SailPoint before. Not looking for expert-level knowledge, just someone who won’t be completely lost when we start talking about attribute mappings and data flows.
The People Side for Identity Management Specialist
This job is probably 60% technical, 40% herding cats. You’ll run a lot of workshops where HR insists their process is perfect while IT explains why it’s impossible to implement. Being able to facilitate these conversations without anyone storming out is a valuable skill.
You should be comfortable with the reality that HR systems and identity systems never quite sync perfectly, and there’s always some edge case breaking everything. Problem-solving and keeping data consistent across multiple systems is basically the entire job.
