We’re Hiring a Frontend Developer (Remote)

Hey there! I’m Alex from Urbio’s development team, and we’re looking for someone awesome to join us.

A bit about us first

Right now, our software is running in cities across Europe – managing street lights, monitoring air quality, helping with traffic flow. Pretty wild to think that code we write here actually affects people’s daily commutes and makes their neighborhoods safer.

We’re still small enough that everyone knows each other, but big enough that we’re working on some seriously cool projects. The kind where you can point to a street lamp in Prague and say “hey, I helped build the software that runs that.”

What you’d be doing

Honestly? A lot of React development. But here’s the thing – it’s not your typical e-commerce site or SaaS dashboard. You’d be building interfaces for city managers to control thousands of IoT devices, dashboards that help optimize energy usage across entire districts, mobile apps that citizens use to report issues.

The technical challenges are fun too. How do you display real-time data from 10,000 sensors without melting someone’s browser? How do you make a control panel that’s simple enough for a busy city official but powerful enough to manage complex infrastructure?

You’d work directly with our product manager (she’s great, by the way) and our designers to figure out what people actually need. No requirements documents written by committee – just real conversations about real problems.Or browse more IT jobs here.

What we’re looking for

Look, I’ll be straight with you. We need someone who’s been around the block with React. Not just “I built a todo app” but “I’ve shipped real products and dealt with the messy parts.”

Technical stuff you should know:

  • React and Next.js (we use these daily)
  • TypeScript (our codebase is mostly TS now)
  • You’ve worked with component libraries like MUI
  • CSS that doesn’t make other developers cry (Tailwind experience is a plus)
  • You understand how APIs work and can integrate with them cleanly

Experience-wise: We’re thinking 7+ years, but honestly, if you’ve got 5 years and you’re really solid, we should talk. What matters more is that you’ve been through the full cycle – building features, debugging production issues, refactoring legacy code, mentoring newer developers.

Personality-wise:

  • You ask good questions instead of just saying “yes” to everything
  • You care about code quality but don’t let perfect be the enemy of good
  • You can work independently (we’re all remote) but jump on a call when something needs discussion
  • You actually like solving problems, not just writing code

The honest pros and cons

The good stuff:

  • Your work has real impact – cities are using what you build
  • Small team means your opinions matter and you can influence technical decisions
  • Fully remote, flexible hours (we have people from Lisbon to Bucharest)
  • We’re growing fast, so lots of opportunity to take on bigger challenges
  • The IoT/smart city space is exploding right now. New to tech? Start here

The potentially challenging stuff:

  • Startup pace means things change quickly
  • You’ll sometimes need to figure stuff out on your own
  • We’re dealing with hardware integration, so debugging can get weird
  • Government clients move slower than we’d like sometimes

Want to chat?

If this sounds interesting, send me your resume and maybe a quick note about what you’re looking for next. I’d love to hear about something you built that you’re proud of – doesn’t have to be work stuff, could be a side project or open source contribution.Need interview tips? Read this success story.

We usually do a casual 30-minute call first (no whiteboarding, I promise), then a technical discussion with the team, and finally you’d meet with our CEO who can tell you more about where we’re headed.

Questions? Just email me directly – alex@urbio.com

Thanks for reading this far. Hope to hear from you soon!

P.S. – We’re committed to building a diverse team. Everyone’s welcome here regardless of background, and we’re happy to work with you on any accommodations you might need during the interview process.
